The bronze statue of Publius Ovidius Naso (43û17 B.C.), the Roman poet, better known as Ovid, is the work of the Italian sculptor Ettore Ferrari and dates from 1887. Situated in the centre of the city, on the site of the former Greek agora and the Roman forum, the statue has a great symbolic value. It is an homage paid to this famous poet, who spent the last years of his life in exile in Tomis (Constan■a) and produced here his famous poems, the Tristiae and Ex Ponto. These works give details about the life and customs of the Getae, the local inhabitants.
